Inside the Relationship between Managers and Senior Leaders

The Deputy Minister Champion of the National Managers' Community (NMC), Christine Donoghue, and Tim Pettipas, Assistant Secretary, Public Service Renewal Secretariat of the Privy Council Office, will be co-hosting and leading an armchair discussion on issues highlighted by managers in their relationship with senior leaders as part of the NMC 2018 Pulse Check Survey. Speakers include Paule Labbé, Assistant Deputy Minister, Executive Management and Leadership Development, Office of the Chief Human Resources Officer (OCHRO) and Colin Hall, co-author of the Conference Board of Canada's report Employee Engagement: Driving Engagement from the Middle. The panel will discuss topics such as confidence in senior management, the need for useful feedback on job performance, and understanding and addressing the needs of staff in the regions.

Actively engaging managers and understanding how they align with senior leaders are key to changing mindsets and behaviours at the organizational level. The goal of this session will be to explore how senior leaders can better support managers in creating a public service that is more agile, more inclusive and better equipped.

Don't miss this discussion of the challenges faced by managers within the Beyond 2020 framework as they help shape the future priorities of the public service and the Government of Canada as a whole.
